Soil Carbon

  • Soil organic carbon (SOC)
Soil organic matter (SOM) is the primary source of SOC, making up about 58% of it. SOM is a key factor in soil's role in the global carbon cycle.

  • Soil carbon content
Most upland soils have 0.5–3.0% organic carbon in their topsoil. Soils with less than 0.5% organic carbon are usually found in deserts. Soils with more than 12–18% organic carbon are considered organic soils.

  • Soil carbon and ecosystem services
SOC is important for many ecosystem services, including:
    • Providing food and fiber

    • Regulating the climate

    • Filtering and purifying water

    • Providing habitats for biodiversity
