Impact of Volcanic Slag on Cucumber Yield, Quality, and Rhizosphere Soil Environment
The application of volcanic slag, a naturally occurring, mineral-rich byproduct of volcanic activity, has shown promising effects on cucumber cultivation. When integrated into agricultural soil, volcanic slag enhances physical and chemical soil properties—improving aeration, moisture retention, and nutrient availability. In this study, cucumbers grown in slag-amended soils exhibited significantly higher yields and improved fruit quality, including increased firmness, sugar content, and vitamin C concentration. Beyond crop performance, volcanic slag positively influenced the rhizosphere soil environment by boosting microbial activity and enzymatic functions, thereby promoting a healthier and more balanced soil microbiome. These findings suggest that volcanic slag is not only an effective soil amendment for improving cucumber productivity and quality, but also a sustainable solution for enhancing soil health and ecological resilience in agricultural systems.
