Effect of cover cropping and biosolarization on eggplant growth, soil pests, and soil nitrogen

 


Cover cropping and biosolarization have shown significant effects on enhancing eggplant growth, managing soil pests, and improving soil nitrogen content. Cover crops, such as legumes or grasses, add organic matter, improve soil structure, and contribute to nitrogen fixation, thereby enriching the soil nutrient profile. When followed by biosolarization—an eco-friendly technique combining solar heating with organic amendments—the soil environment is further optimized by reducing pest populations such as nematodes, soil-borne pathogens, and weed seeds. This integrated approach not only suppresses harmful organisms but also stimulates beneficial microbial activity, leading to better nutrient cycling and availability. As a result, eggplants grown in such treated soils tend to exhibit improved vegetative growth, higher fruit yields, and greater overall plant health, while minimizing the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
