Purple Soil

Purple soil, commonly found in subtropical and tropical regions, derives its distinctive color from the high content of iron and manganese oxides. It is primarily developed from purple sandstones and shales, making it rich in minerals but often low in organic matter. These soils are commonly found in regions of China, particularly in the Sichuan Basin. While purple soils have good drainage and moderate fertility, they are prone to erosion due to their loose structure and sloping landscapes. To improve agricultural productivity, conservation practices such as organic amendments, terracing, and cover cropping are essential.
