Impacts of forest conversion and seasonal dynamics on soil nutrient heterogeneity

Forest conversion and seasonal variations play a significant role in shaping soil nutrient heterogeneity, especially around termite mounds, which are known as biogeochemical hotspots. The transformation of natural forests into agricultural or degraded landscapes often disrupts the natural distribution and cycling of essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic carbon. Termite mounds, however, can mitigate some of these effects by enhancing soil structure and concentrating nutrients. Seasonal dynamics further influence these patterns by altering moisture availability, microbial activity, and organic matter decomposition. Understanding how forest conversion and seasonal changes interact with termite mound-associated soils is crucial for managing soil fertility and ecological resilience in tropical and subtropical regions. Impact of Volcanic Slag on Cucumber Yield, Quality, and Rhizosphere Soil Environment

The application of volcanic slag, a naturally occurring, mineral-rich byproduct of volcanic activity, has shown promising effects on cucumber cultivation. When integrated into agricultural soil, volcanic slag enhances physical and chemical soil properties—improving aeration, moisture retention, and nutrient availability. In this study, cucumbers grown in slag-amended soils exhibited significantly higher yields and improved fruit quality, including increased firmness, sugar content, and vitamin C concentration. Beyond crop performance, volcanic slag positively influenced the rhizosphere soil environment by boosting microbial activity and enzymatic functions, thereby promoting a healthier and more balanced soil microbiome. These findings suggest that volcanic slag is not only an effective soil amendment for improving cucumber productivity and quality, but also a sustainable solution for enhancing soil health and ecological resilience in agricultural systems. Biodegradation Potential of Phenolic Compounds in Contaminated Environments

Phenolic compounds, widely recognized as hazardous environmental pollutants, are commonly released into soil and water systems through industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, and municipal waste. Assessing their biodegradation potential is crucial for developing sustainable remediation strategies. This involves evaluating microbial communities capable of degrading phenols, identifying metabolic pathways, and optimizing environmental conditions that support effective breakdown. Advanced analytical techniques such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) are used to monitor degradation rates and identify intermediate byproducts. Understanding the ecological interactions and genetic mechanisms that drive phenol biodegradation enhances our ability to harness natural or engineered microbes for bioremediation, contributing to the restoration of contaminated environments and promoting environmental health. Soil Health and Crop Quality in Modern Agriculture

Sustainable agricultural practices are vital for improving soil health and ensuring high-quality crop production in the face of growing environmental challenges. Techniques such as crop rotation, cover cropping, reduced tillage, and organic amendments help maintain soil structure, enhance microbial activity, and reduce erosion. Integrating precision agriculture technologies allows for efficient nutrient management and minimizes chemical overuse, preserving soil integrity. Composting and the application of biofertilizers restore essential nutrients and support long-term fertility. Moreover, agroforestry and integrated pest management (IPM) offer natural solutions to maintain ecological balance. Together, these practices not only boost crop yield and quality but also contribute to resilient farming systems and environmental sustainability.
